Up-and-coming boxer Rilwan Lawal says he wants to punch his way up the boxing ladder after he defeated Enoch Lamptey at the Aborigines Beach Resort, Keta, Ghana, in round two on his pro debut on November 3.
Rilwan knocked down Lamptey in round two of their six-round super bantamweight bout. However, the Ghanaian continued the fight but eventually surrendered after suffering a cut close to his eye. It was an undercard fight headlined by a fight involving two-time bantamweight world champion Joseph Agbeko.
“I always want to be the best in everything I do. I had adequate preparations and my manager gave me the necessary support, so I went into the fight with full confidence of winning,” Rilwan, who recently signed a five-year $100,000 deal with FADA and FADA Global Contracting, in partnership with Azzur Entertainment, said.
Rilwan, popularly known as ‘D Real Show Boi’ by his fans, is the Nigerian Army and Nigerian Armed Forces lightweight champion, the 2016 Governors’ Belt holder, at amateur level. He said experience at amateur level helped him overcome Lamptey.
“I respect him (Lamptey) a lot and didn’t look down on him but I was calm and got the job done, this is because I have been into boxing as an amateur,” the 25-year-old added.
Balogun Omokayode, the Managing Director, FADA and FADA Global Contracting, who revealed that Rilwan already has offers from the US and UK, said the fear he had going into the bout with the “heavier” Ghanaian was doused in round one after some dazzling displays by the Nigerian boxer.
He stated, “Rilwan was phenomenal; for him to stop an opponent heavier than him in the second round was unbelievable. He had trained but in the first round, I was worried because I was there with him and I was just scared.
“But after the first round, I knew it was a matter of time before Rilwan won and within five seconds (in round two), his opponent dropped. He’s still improving but there’s no boxer like him right now.”
