The story of Lagos @ 50 and its transformation from a Fishing State to a Mega City can never be complete without putting into consideration and proper documentation the place of its musical evolution.
It is pertinent to note that some musicians born in Lagos and those who attained the peak of their musical career in Lagos State contributed immensely to the social, economic, political, religious growth of Lagos State through their music.
So many musicians that have contributed to the development of the State have been relegated and totally forgotten even at a most sensitive period of history like this. The early pioneers of Old Lagos musical genres ie Sakara, Apala, Waka, Agidigbo , Juju , Highlife etc have remained in the doldrums of history and today become an oblivion of our musical past.
It is therefore in the interest of all of us to foster desirable values in our society, connect our glorious old Lagos past through music with the present disoriented world and enhance the preservation, propagation and sharing of African values and traditions though music amongst other things. I remember these legends of Lagos music like Abibu Oluwa, Ayinde Bakare, Irewolede Denge, Ambrose Campbell, Saka Olayigbade, Adeolu Akisanya and His Rio Lindo Orchestra, Bobby Benson, just to mention of few.
In Pursuant to this City People Entertainment, Evergreen Musical Company and MMIs are setting out on a mission to document history with an upcoming event Tagged “ 10 Music Icons of Lagos Music Evolution” for the sake of our children yet unborn
As part of the lined up activities to mark this once in a lifetime event which will be held in December at the City People Event Center plans are already in place to give awards to the following categories of persons.
The Lifeline of Fuji Music in Lagos
Recognition Award for the Juju Musicians who have helped to bridge the Gap between the old and young in Juju Music
Award for the foremost theatre music practitioner in Nigerian history.
The Lifeline of Waka music in Nigeria, Special Recognition award for the early pioneers of Agidigbo, Juju, Fuji, Apala, Highlife
Also the world renowned Afrobeat Music Legend will be awarded for paving a way for many of today’s musician to follow.
Therefore let us all join hands to echo and celebrate the legacies of our musical heritage as we celebrate Lagos @ 50.
