This may be the time for Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor-elect of Lagos State to answer fully to the issue of the state of his mental health and criminal records and how fit and proper he is to hold the position which would be entrusted on him next month.
This is because the Alliance for Democracy (AD) and its governorship candidate in March 9 election, Owolabi Salis, have now resurrected the issue, which came up briefly some months ago.
Incumbent Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, was the first to raise the issue that the governor-elect, who was then his opponent for the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was mentally-ill and had a criminal record in the US and therefore ill-fitted to become governor.
But the matter had quickly evaporated before the campaigns proper, after Ambode threw in the towel and teamed up Sanwo-Olu who eventually won the APC ticket, to eventually win the main election.
However, the issue has been unearthed once again, this time by the AD camp which filed a petition at the Lagos State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, with the main intention to stop the governor-elect from being sworn in as governor on May 29.
Also listed as respondents in the petition are Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), All Progressives Congress (APC), and INEC residential electoral commissioner, Sam Olumekun.
Other respondents are the returning officer for the election, commissioner of police and the Nigerian Army.
Part of the petition read: “The second respondent (Sanwo-Olu) is a person adjudged to be of unsound mind and who is not capable to be sworn in as the Governor of Lagos state.
“Sanwo-Olu has records of unsound mind and rehabilitation with the Gbagada General Hospital Lagos state.
“By virtue of section 182(1)(c) of the 1999 constitution as (amended), the second respondent is a person not qualified to be sworn in as a governor.
“Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, the present governor of Lagos state and who is the chief security officer of the state attested to the fact that Sanwo-Olu is of unsound mind and not fit and proper person to govern Lagos State.
“Governor Ambode equally stated that Sanwo-Olu was arrested and detained for several months and was convicted for spending fake dollars at a night club in America.”
